Riversong Guides is an experienced two man business. Cumulatively our guides have 50 years of experience fly fishing the waters of southern New Zealand. A conscious effort has been made to focus our guiding on the Wanaka area rather than involve our clients in long journeys. The Wanaka area provides excellent opportunities on lakes, rivers and streams, renowned as some of the best in the world.
New Zealand’s wild fisheries pose the ultimate challenge for the visiting angler and our guides are well qualified to give you a taste of this experience. Riversong Guides has also come to specialise in tuition and will hone the skills required to make your experience memorable. Tuition can range from a few hours to a several-day package wherein the client will end up fishing some magical waters.
In an effort to provide further diversity late evening fishing is provided for and highly recommended. Without doubt the best chances of catching trout is to fish the late evening insect hatches. Time for this is at a relaxed hour and seems to fit in well with peoples travel movements.

Ian is a retired Solicitor, and lives in Albert Town, Wanaka, where he and his wife Ann run Riversong Bed and Breakfast/Home stay, overlooking the majestic Clutha River. A Fish and Game Councilor from 1990 until 2003, and Southland appointee to the New Zealand Council during that time also Fish and Game's appointed Trustee to the Waiau Fisheries and Habitat Enhancement Trust from its inception in 1997, until his retirement. He is formally one of two South Island trustees to the New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Trust, established under the Wildlife Act. Ian has spent a lifetime pursuing his passion fly fishing, and now enjoys not only the pursuit of trout with others, but also tutoring newcomers to the sport of fishing. Phone: +64 3 443 8567 |

As a life long angler with a passion for backcountry fly fishing coupled with having been a Fish and Game councillor for 25 years John has kept a wider and influential prospective on issues facing our fisheries. Through his experiences John has gained an intimate knowledge of the southern rivers and lakes of our region.
