Without doubt lake fishing in Central Otago is an experience hugely under-rated by anglers. For obvious reasons anglers can become fixated on rivers ignoring some of the best fishing the Southern Lakes has to offer. The southern and central Otago lakes are undoubtedly the most productive lake systems in New Zealand. Creel surveys undertaken by Fish & Game NZ and Department of Conservation reveal it takes half the time to catch a fish in Central Otago lakes as it does in Lake Taupo which belies its reputation.
Sight-fishing to large trout cruising in the lake margins is very exciting and right up there with sight-fishing on our back country streams. For our own pleasure we prefer Otago’s lakes. Access is easy and the fishing exhilarating and plentiful. Many folk we have guided on rivers are totally enthused after being introduced to a day on the lake. Why didn’t you show us this earlier is the usual cry!
